Last year I was verbally abused, mocked and derided by people for whom I had worked damned hard to get the best deal I could out of Manchester City Council. Across this country thousands of hard working Liberal Democrat councillors and activists were facing the same situation.
In 2010 the Liberal Democrats reluctantly joined forces with the Conservative Party to work together in the National interest to tackle a historic structural deficit created by a failed Labour Government. Our colleagues in Westminster had to take tough decisisons and make cuts to services and jobs that none of us relished.
Throughout the remainder of 2010 and the first half of 2011 we were constantly attacked by the Labour Party, and particularly Ed Milliband and Ed Balls for making cuts that were too deep and too soon. They constantly called for the Government to adopt a mythical ‘Plan B’ which would somehow right all the wrongs, and thousands of people the length and bredth of this country were duped by yet another Labour lie.
Last weekend, the two Ed’s finally came clean and admitted that actually there is no ‘Plan B’ for the economy after all.
The Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader, Simon Hughes, and our Party President, Tim Farron, have called on the two Eds to apologise to the British public for deceiving them for 18 months.
Last May I was one of many Liberal Democrat councillors who lost our council seats to undeserving Labour candidates who were fighting their elections on a false platform with dishonest messages. They stood on a platform that the Eds now admit was wrong. For 18 months my party leader, Nick Clegg, has been berated and abused by the Labour leadership for having the guts to stand up and work as part of the Coalition in the best interest of the country.
Now Labour have admitted that their attacks were inaccurate – but there’s no hint of apology. They have gone from being in the wrong place, to all over the place.
That leaves the Liberal Democrats as the only political party with the backbone to tackle the country’s problems, but with the heart to do everything we can to ensure that fairness, compassion and justice are written through everything we do.
I have posted this link to an article from The Times which recognises, the Liberal Democrats are a progressive force in Government. We are the Party delivering tax cuts for working people, we are the party investing in the poorest school pupils, we are the party delivering the largest ever state pension rise and importantly, we are the party prepared to take the tough decisions needed to get this country back on track.
I do not expect those Labour councillors who were last year elected on the back of lies and deceipts to ever apologise, but I do hope that the people of this country are as angry with them as I am and that this coming May the Labour Party get the response from the people that their lies and decipts warrant.
