The rampage of an american soldier must not be an excuse to accelerate British and American withdrawal from Afghanistan

British troops should leave Afghanistan as early as possible leaving the nation to look after its own security and not being a haven for terror, without the involvement of foreign troops.

Afghanistan is expected to dominate discussions between the PM and President Obama this week although other topics including Syria and Iran are also likely to be on the agenda.

The visit incident last week, when and American soldier shot dead 16 Afghan civilians, will make the task all the harder, but for the sake of those British soldiers who have given their lives in Afghanistan this shooting must not influence the timing of the withdrawal.

British and US combat troops are expected to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, and the programme of work in preparing the Afghans to look after their own country must be completed.
