I am proud to stand the cultural heritage of this Nation alongside any other!

Aides to Vladamir Putin have made absolute denials that he has stated that Britain is a small island that nobody listens to.  Actually, I don’t care whether he said that or not because quite frankly I know that Britain is a small island, I learned that in school when I was about six.  It was about the same time as I learned Shakespeare’s classic speech from Richard II.

“This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.”

Other nations have poets, and playwrights and authors, and artists and artisans, but when it comes to Britain we have an array to match up to any other nation.

These Islands boast playwrights of the calibre and variety and imagination of the likes of Shakespeare and Bennet and Wilde and Curtis, of Shaw and Adams and Perry and Croft?

These Islands boast poets the likes of Chaucer and Wordsworth and Keats and Browning, of Tennyson, Carrol and Thomas?

These Islands boast authors as varied as Shelly and the Bronte’s and Blyton and Christie and Linneus-Banks and Dickens and Rowling and Pratchett and Amis.

These islands boast composers including Holst and Britten, Vaughan Williams and Elgar and Purcell and Lloyd Webber and Novello.

British musicals and dramas are being played in theatres around the globe, British musicians play in every great concert hall and stadium the world can offer.  British artists are displayed and admired around the world, the likes of Turner and Delaney, and Lowry and Hoggarth and Stubbs and Gainsborough.

I am proud to stand the cultural heritage of this Nation alongside any other, no matter how big or small, but it is not just in culture that Britain excels.  British science, British sport, British Medicine and British Industry also lead the world and I will look at these in subsequent posts.

What I will say for now though is this, if the rest of the world lived up to British standards and quality and achievements then this would be a much happier world for it.

  1. I am not sure, but were you replying to the post your reply was attached to, which had no mention of any political party of leader, or was it to a different post entirely?

  2. I agreed with everything you wrote until I read the last paragraph! How on earth could anyone want to live up to the standards of Cameron, Clegg and Osborne? Even the thought makes me sick to my stomach. And before you start ranting ‘socialist bigot’, I have been a trade union member all my life. During the miners’ strike I was on a Lodge committee of the NUM. I was the only Tory on a NUM committee. God, I shudder to think of the time I voted for Maggie. I was naive – very, very naive. Two days after the strike ended I changed my allegiance because of the out and out lies the Sun newspaper printed the week we all went back. I have voted and supported the Labour Party ever since. And before you start ranting again about socialism I dislike Ed Milliband and think he’s a terrible leader, weak, indecisive and unable to see the consequences of his actions. When he makes any that is. He ballsed it up over the unions in Falkirk and lost the party a lot of money. What worries me is he could do the same if he ever became Prime Minister. Cameron and Clegg have dumped us in a large hole in the ground and I’m afraid the lack of leadership in the Labour Party is throwing the earth in on top of us.
