Aides to Vladamir Putin have made absolute denials that he has stated that Britain is a small island that nobody listens to. Actually, I don’t care whether he said that or not because quite frankly I know that Britain is a small island, I learned that in school when I was about six. It was about the same time as I learned Shakespeare’s classic speech from Richard II.
“This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.”
Other nations have poets, and playwrights and authors, and artists and artisans, but when it comes to Britain we have an array to match up to any other nation.
These Islands boast playwrights of the calibre and variety and imagination of the likes of Shakespeare and Bennet and Wilde and Curtis, of Shaw and Adams and Perry and Croft?
These Islands boast poets the likes of Chaucer and Wordsworth and Keats and Browning, of Tennyson, Carrol and Thomas?
These Islands boast authors as varied as Shelly and the Bronte’s and Blyton and Christie and Linneus-Banks and Dickens and Rowling and Pratchett and Amis.
These islands boast composers including Holst and Britten, Vaughan Williams and Elgar and Purcell and Lloyd Webber and Novello.
British musicals and dramas are being played in theatres around the globe, British musicians play in every great concert hall and stadium the world can offer. British artists are displayed and admired around the world, the likes of Turner and Delaney, and Lowry and Hoggarth and Stubbs and Gainsborough.
I am proud to stand the cultural heritage of this Nation alongside any other, no matter how big or small, but it is not just in culture that Britain excels. British science, British sport, British Medicine and British Industry also lead the world and I will look at these in subsequent posts.
What I will say for now though is this, if the rest of the world lived up to British standards and quality and achievements then this would be a much happier world for it.
